Our Story

Knickers opened its doors in the summer of 1971, in the shadow of the candy-striped lighthouse standing over the picturesque marina village of Harbour Town, in Sea Pines Plantation, Hilton Head Island, SC.

Conceived and developed by the visionary Charles Fraser, a still young Harbour Town would soon blossom into a world class resort destination. And the name Knickers would come to represent the lowcountry gold standard for fine menswear, featuring individualized attention and unequaled customer service.

Throughout the 70s and early 80s, traditional men’s tailored clothing—Norman Hilton, Ralph Lauren, Hickey Freeman—dominated the men’s fashion scene. As a less formal look gradually evolved, Knickers began to emphasize more casual and colorful resort wear. By the late 80s, it possessed one of the largest Polo accounts in the country, and in 1993 it partnered with a new line called Tommy Bahama, quickly elevating that brand into the must-wear category.

Today, Knickers still thrives in beautiful Harbour Town, and we showcase our superb selection of men’s sportswear and accessories on these pages. Whether you seek the trendy and youthful Southern prep brands—Vineyard Vines, Southern Tide, Sperry, johnnie-O—or prefer the more mature lines such as Peter Millar, Turtleson and, of course, Tommy Bahama, the diverse Knickers menswear collection will dress discerning gentlemen of all ages in splendid southern style.

We hope you come see us in Harbour Town, but if a Hilton Head visit is not in your plans, please peruse our collections here on the site. Contact us and a knowledgeable sales team member will be happy to help. Jack & Joan Shea, owners
